Tour Route
Corinth Canal
Route 4 hours

How the trip works: the driver picks you up at your hotel in the afternoon and follows the coast south — an optional stop at Vouliagmeni Lake, the road along the Athenian Riviera, and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion in time for the sunset. You visit on your own while he waits, and then he drives you back to Athens.

If you would like a licensed guide, I can give you the tour myself. If I am busy that day, I will find you a good colleague. Write to me in advance and we will arrange it.

The trip takes about 4 hours with a photo stop at the lake. If you would like to swim, tell me in advance and we will plan the extra time. The departure time depends on the season, because it is set by the hour of the sunset.

Vouliagmeni Lake

Vouliagmeni is a small lake under a cliff, fed by warm underground springs, so the water stays at about 22–27°C all year. The 4-hour trip includes a ten-minute photo stop here; a proper swim is possible if you arrange it in advance.

Vouliagmeni Thermal Lake

If you swim, the entrance is €19 per person and includes sunbeds, changing rooms and showers. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. The small fish in the lake nibble at your feet — harmless, and children love it.

Vouliagmeni Lake sunbeds

A swim adds about an hour and a half to the trip, so it has to be arranged when you book: the departure from Athens is moved earlier to keep the sunset at Sounion.

There is a café by the water, if you would rather have a drink with the view while others in your party swim.

From the lake the road follows the sea all the way to the cape: small coves, beaches and marinas on one side, low pine-covered hills on the other. This is the scenic part of the trip — ask the driver for a photo stop at any bay you like; there are several lay-bys above the water.

Visiting the Temple of Poseidon on Your Own

Cape Sounion

The Temple of Poseidon was built in the 5th century BC on the cliff at the southern tip of Attica, about 60 metres above the sea. From the ticket office it is a five-minute walk up to the temple; the path is easy but stony.

Temple of Poseidon sunset

Walk around the temple first: fifteen of its marble columns still stand, and on one of them you can find the name of Lord Byron, who carved it here in 1810. The temple itself is roped off, so you see it from the path around it.

Temple of Poseidon columns

For the sunset, most people gather on the rocks west of the temple; the photograph with the columns against the sun is taken from the slope below, on the way back down. It is often windy on the cape — bring a light jacket outside the summer months.

There is a café-restaurant by the entrance with a terrace facing the temple, if you would like a drink while the light changes. The drive back to Athens takes an hour to an hour and a half, and the driver takes you to your hotel door.

Cape Sounion by Private Car — Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about the day trip by private car with a driver.

From €250 per car for the whole trip in a Škoda Octavia (up to 4 passengers); a Mercedes Vito minibus for up to 8 passengers is €350. The price is per car, not per person, and includes the English-speaking driver, fuel, road tolls and parking.

The driver picks you up at your hotel in the afternoon: 30–50 minutes to Vouliagmeni Lake, 40–45 minutes along the Athenian Riviera to Cape Sounion, arriving 40–50 minutes before sunset, and an hour to an hour and a half back. The trip takes about 4 hours.

The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is €20 per person; under 18 free. Vouliagmeni Lake is €19 per person and only if you swim. Tickets are bought at each entrance and are not included in the price of the car.

Of course — the standard 4-hour trip has only a 5–10 minute photo stop at the lake. A swim is extra time and is arranged in advance.

Yes. Child seats are available on request — tell me the ages when you book. The lake is warm with an easy entry; at Cape Sounion keep an eye on small children near the cliffs.

A swimsuit and a towel if you plan to swim, comfortable shoes and sunscreen. It can be windy at Cape Sounion, so a light jacket is useful outside the summer months.

No. The driver speaks English, looks after the road and the timing and can tell you about the places you pass, but he is not a professional guide and does not go inside the archaeological site with you. A professional guide is provided at extra cost: I am a licensed guide and can give you the tour myself, and if I am busy that day I will find you a good colleague.
