Tour Route
Below you'll find a detailed description of each tour stop — with photos, historical context, and practical tips.
Day Route

How the day works: the driver picks you up at your hotel or at the port of Piraeus and drives the classic loop of the Argolid — a photo stop at the Corinth Canal, the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, lunch and a walk in Nafplio, and the citadel of Mycenae. You visit each place on your own while he waits, and then he drives you back to Athens.

If you would like a licensed guide, I can give you the tour myself. If I am busy that day, I will find you a good colleague. Write to me in advance and we will arrange it.

Driving is about 4 hours in total, split into five short legs, and the stops take about 4.5 hours — the whole day is about 9 hours.

The Corinth Canal Stop

10–15 minutes · photo stop on the bridge
The first stop, about an hour from Athens: a walk onto the bridge for the view straight down the canal.

Corinth Canal

About an hour after leaving Athens the driver pulls over next to the old bridge over the Corinth Canal. Walk out to the middle of the footbridge: the cut is about six kilometres long and its walls drop some eighty metres to the water — that is the photograph. There are cafés and toilets by the parking area, so this is also the natural coffee break of the morning. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough; if a ship is passing through, stay a little longer.

The Coastal Road to Epidaurus

40–50 minutes along the Saronic Gulf
A quiet seaside road instead of the motorway.

From the canal the driver takes the coast road south along the Saronic Gulf rather than the motorway: pine-covered hills on one side, the sea and small fishing villages on the other. There is nothing you have to do on this stretch — sit back, and ask for a photo stop wherever the view deserves one.

Visiting the Theatre of Epidaurus on Your Own

Allow about 1 hour · easy walk
The driver drops you at the entrance; the theatre is five minutes away on foot.

Panorama of the Theatre of Epidaurus

The car park is right by the ticket office. From the gate it is a gentle five-minute walk under the pines to the theatre, built in the 4th century BC and still used for performances every summer. Climb to the top row: the view over the hills is the best photograph, and it is the best place to test the famous acoustics — ask someone to speak or drop a coin on the round stone in the centre of the stage.

Epidaurus

The same ticket covers the small museum by the entrance and the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the ancient healing centre the theatre belonged to; they are a flat ten-minute walk further on. If time is short, the theatre alone is what most visitors come for. There is shade and a café near the entrance, but the theatre itself is in full sun — bring water and a hat in summer.

Nafplio: Lunch and a Walk in the Old Town

About 1.5 hours · lunch at your own expense
The driver leaves you at the harbour, a minute from the old town.
Nafplio

Nafplio

Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece and is the prettiest town of the day. The driver drops you by the harbour; from there the old town is a few flat streets of Venetian houses, bougainvillea and small shops leading to Syntagma Square. Out in the bay you will see Bourtzi, the little island fortress, and high above the town the walls of Palamidi.

Nafplio

For lunch there are fish tavernas along the waterfront and traditional tavernas in the lanes one street back — the driver can suggest one. If you would rather have the view than a long lunch, ask him to drive you up to the gate of the Palamidi fortress: by car it takes ten minutes and saves the long staircase from the town.

Visiting Mycenae on Your Own

Allow 1–1.5 hours · uphill path · sturdy shoes
The last stop: the citadel of Agamemnon, half an hour from Nafplio.
Mycenae
Read moreCollapse
View from the Mycenae citadel

Mycenae was the centre of the Bronze Age civilisation that takes its name from it and, in Homer, the home of King Agamemnon, who led the Greeks against Troy. From the car park a paved path climbs to the top of the citadel, where the palace stood. Little of it remains, but the view over the Argolid plain to the sea explains why the fortress was built here. The path is uneven and has no shade, so wear proper shoes.

Treasury of Atreus

The Treasury of Atreus, also called the Tomb of Agamemnon, is a separate stop a few hundred metres down the road and is included in the same ticket — the driver takes you there by car. Step inside: the great beehive dome is more than three thousand years old and still complete.

Lion Gate of Mycenae

You enter the citadel through the Lion Gate, with its two lions carved above the lintel. Just inside on the right is Grave Circle A, where Heinrich Schliemann found the gold treasures now shown in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. The small museum by the entrance takes about twenty minutes and is air-conditioned. Agree a meeting time with the driver before you go in.

Mycenae, Epidaurus & Nafplio by Private Car — Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about the day trip by private car with a driver.

From €450 per car for the whole day in a Škoda Octavia (up to 4 passengers); a Mercedes Vito minibus for up to 8 passengers is €600. The price is per car, not per person, and includes the English-speaking driver, fuel, road tolls and parking.

The driver picks you up at your hotel or at the port of Piraeus and drives the loop Corinth Canal – Epidaurus – Nafplio – Mycenae. At each stop he drops you at the entrance and waits; you visit on your own, at your own pace. The whole day takes about 9 hours door to door.

Mycenae is €20 and Epidaurus is €20 per person; under 18 free. Tickets are bought at each entrance and are not included in the price of the car.

In Nafplio, where you have about an hour and a half. There are fish tavernas on the waterfront and traditional tavernas in the lanes of the old town; the driver can suggest one. Lunch is at your own expense.

Yes. Child seats are available on request — tell me the ages when you book. Under-18s enter Mycenae and Epidaurus free of charge, and with your own car you can stop whenever the children need a break.

No. The driver speaks English, looks after the road and the timing and can tell you about the places you pass, but under Greek law only a licensed guide may guide inside archaeological sites and museums. A professional guide is provided at extra cost: I am a licensed guide and can give you the tour myself, and if I am busy that day I will find you a good colleague.
