Athens to Delphi by Car — the Route
Route of the Delphi day trip from Athens
Route about 8 hours

How the day works: the driver picks you up at your hotel or at the port of Piraeus, stops in the mountain town of Arachova and brings you to the entrance of ancient Delphi. You visit the archaeological site and the museum on your own while he waits, and then he drives you back to Athens.

If you would like a licensed guide, I can give you the tour myself. If I am busy that day, I will find you a good colleague. Write to me in advance and we will arrange it.

The drive from Athens to Delphi takes 2–2.5 hours each way. With a short stop in Arachova and up to 3 hours in Delphi, the whole day is about 8 hours.

The Drive from Athens & the Arachova Stop

Arachova — mountain town on Parnassus

Your driver collects you from the hotel lobby or the cruise terminal in Piraeus — an early start, around 8:00, is the best way to reach Delphi before the coach groups. The first hour and a half is motorway, then a quieter road climbs towards Mount Parnassus. Tell the driver if you would like a rest stop on the way.

Arachova sits at about 950 metres, a few minutes before Delphi. Most guests stop here for 20–30 minutes: a coffee on the main street, photos of the houses stepping down the slope, perhaps a look at the local cheese and woven goods in the shops. The driver waits with the car and you leave whenever you are ready. If you would rather keep the morning for Delphi, the stop can move to the way back.

The Pythia — priestess of Apollo at Delphi

For about a thousand years Delphi was the most important oracle of the Greek world. Cities and private people came here to put a question to the god Apollo, and the answer was spoken by a priestess, the Pythia, inside his temple. The sanctuary grew rich on their gifts, which is why the path up the hill is lined with the remains of treasuries and monuments.

The Omphalos — the Navel of the Earth at Delphi

The Greeks also called this place the centre of the world and marked it with a stone, the omphalos — you will see one on the site and another in the museum. That is all the background you need to enjoy the visit on your own. For the full story, read my Delphi private tour with a licensed guide page beforehand.

Visiting the Delphi Archaeological Site on Your Own

Castalian Spring at Delphi

The driver leaves you right at the entrance to the archaeological site, where you buy the ticket — one ticket covers both the site and the museum. From the gate a single paved path, the Sacred Way, zigzags uphill, so you cannot get lost: first the Treasury of the Athenians, then the Temple of Apollo, above it the theatre, and at the very top the stadium.

Sacred Way at Delphi

The climb to the theatre takes about 20–30 minutes at an easy pace; the stadium is another 10 minutes up and worth it if you have the energy. There is little shade, so in summer bring water, a hat and shoes with a good grip — the old stones are slippery.

Temple of Apollo at Delphi

Information boards in English stand at every monument. Before or after the main site, ask the driver to stop for a few minutes at the Castalian Spring by the road and at the round temple of Athena Pronaia a little further down — the most photographed view in Delphi.

Theatre at Delphi

In the hot months start with the site while it is still cool and keep the museum for later; in winter or in rain do it the other way round. Either way, agree a meeting time with the driver before you go in — he will be waiting at the car park by the entrance.

The Delphi Museum & Lunch

Museum 45–60 minutes · lunch in Delphi town
Finish with the museum next to the site, then a relaxed lunch before the drive home.

Delphi Museum

The museum is a five-minute level walk from the site entrance and is covered by the same ticket. It is compact and air-conditioned — a welcome break after the hill. Give it 45 minutes to an hour.

Treasures of the Delphi Museum

Do not miss the bronze Charioteer in the last room, the Sphinx of the Naxians, the two tall archaic statues known as the twins of Argos, and the gold and ivory finds in the darkened room.

The Charioteer of Delphi

For lunch, the modern town of Delphi is two minutes away, and several tavernas there have terraces over the valley and the sea of olive trees below. The driver can suggest a place or drop you where you choose. A quick lunch fits into the day; for a long, slow one, tell me in advance so that we plan the extra waiting time.

No. The driver speaks English, looks after the road and the timing and can tell you about the places you pass, but under Greek law only a licensed guide may guide inside archaeological sites and museums.
